Watercolor Bookmarks

This project can be as easy or complex as you would like. Here are the steps we took:

Supplies:

  • Watercolor/Multimedia Paper

  • Paints and Brushes (Use what you have! We had a great time with watercolors.)

  • Laminator and Lamination Strips (You could substitute this with clear packing or duct tape.)

  • Hole Punch (*optional)

  • Floss or yarn (*optional)

Directions:

  1. Cut your paper to the desired size.

  2. Decorate your bookmarks.

  3. Laminate the bookmarks using a laminator or tape. We decided to laminate the bookmarks to protect the bookmarks from bending or transferring paint to the book pages. If using clear packing or duct tape, I recommend cutting the tape a little extra long and trimming it once you have sandwiched your art between two strips.

  4. *If you want to add floss or yarn to the top of your bookmark, punch a few evenly spaced holes along the top of your bookmark. (If you used the tape method, consider punching your holes through the paper as well. The tape alone may not be strong enough to support the threads.)

  5. *Cut several lengths of floss or yarn and separate them into the same number of groupings as you have holes punched.

  6. *Fold each group of threads in half and feed the folded side of each group through the corresponding hole. Pull the thread through just far enough so that you have a loop of threads on one side of the bookmark and the ends remain on the other side. Next, reach through the loop, grab the ends of that group of threads, and pull them through until they are tight against the bookmark and all ends are pulled through.

  7. *You can braid, weave, or leave the threads of your bookmark loose! Trim threads to your desired length and you are finished!
